Jack Doohan Set To Make Australian Formula 1 History With Alpine Next Season

Australian star Jack Doohan is tipped to line up alongside Pierre Gasly at Alpine for 2025, something the French outfit teased with a timely social media post just a few weeks ago, and it’s a timely reward for Doohan’s patience; a rare commodity in Formula 1.

Formula 1 might be one of the most competitive sports in the world, with the world’s best drivers competing within the strict confines of the racetrack for the top spot on the podium. But with just ten teams in the current format and twenty seats available, emerging drivers will have to rely on more than just talent to realise an F1 dream, biding their time for their big moment… and Jack Doohan’s trajectory is a testament to that.

The rising driver has spent this season as Alpine’s reserve driver after signing in 2022, behind his new teammate and the outgoing Esteban Ocon. But the Australian has been biding his time with six Free Practice appearances in Mexico, Hungary and Abu Dhabi and stepping up for the team when it matters most.

Jack Doohan’s path to Formula 1

The 21-year-old started life in motorsport like every other driver on the grid: competing in karts before stepping up to the now-defunct Formula 4 British Championship when he was just 15 years old.

In the years that followed, Doohan plied his trade through the series, finishing runner-up in F3, before heading up to F2. His impressive outings caught the attention of Red Bull, who signed him for the Junior Team in 2017 but switched to Alpine for a better shot at a full-time seat in Formula 1.

Many other drivers would continue to compete in F2 for invaluable experience as they await their opportunity, but Doohan saw an opportunity to bide his time as Alpine’s third driver; a bold strategy, one that was heavily criticised as a backwards step in his flourishing career.

But Doohan’s patience and consistent performance have positioned him as a rising star in F1, ready to make his mark in the top tier of motorsport. 2025 will see three Australian drivers lining up on the Formula 1 grid for the first time in history. Doohan’s big moment is finally there for the taking.
