UFC President Dana White has confirmed that Conor McGregor’s comeback fight with Michael Chandler has been cancelled after the Irishman sustained another injury in training, although no further details were disclosed.

Viral videos of Conor McGregor partying it up were doing the rounds last month, with huge swatches of MMA fans questioning whether the former champ was going to make it to the UFC 303 weigh-in this month, let alone his highly-anticipated comeback bout with Michael Chandler on 30 June.

McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021, and through a series of missed drug tests and failure to register for the UFC by the deadline, his return to the Octagon has been a hot topic for fight fans desperate to see one of the promotion’s biggest names.

Conor McGregor’s next fight with Michael Chandler cancelled

It seems though, that McGregor’s Green Army will be waiting even longer after the 35-year-old fighter sustained another injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from his Welterweight bout with Michael Chandler this month.

The specifics of the injury are yet to be disclosed, and the promotion hasn’t given any indication whether McGregor’s fight will be rescheduled, but with the considerable commercial value that McGregor brings to the UFC, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him slated for later in the year.

UFC will likely push light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira as the UFC 303 Main Event when he puts his title on the line against Jiri Prochazka in Nevada. Australian fighter Alex Volkanovski has come forward to say that although the 30 June date is soon, he wouldn’t rule out a sensational step up in McGregor’s absence.

“End of June, so that is soon,” Volkanovski said. “I mean, you never know, right? I don’t mind Connor, but I don’t think even me now, like, I’m not that fit at the moment, but I still think I outlast Conor so, he’s not going to like that.”

Well, it wouldn’t exactly be the first time Volk has saved the day.
