Kylian Mbappé’s next club has finally been confirmed after years of speculation, with the French forward joining Champions League winners Real Madrid on a free transfer when his current PSG contract expires on 30 June… but he’s reportedly taking a serious pay cut to make the deal possible.


If you had seen the recent images coming out of the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend, you wouldn’t immediately think this super team could have done with some more firepower.

But as the Real Madrid players celebrated a historic 16th UEFA Champions League title, after beating Borussia Dortmund in the final in London, reports were slowly flooding in that PSG’s talisman Kylian Mbappé had finally signed with the Spanish champions after years of speculation.

Mbappé has been the subject of much speculation throughout his early career, with the young forward one of European football’s hottest prospects since bursting onto the scene as a teenage sensation with Monaco all those years ago.

But for Mbappé, it’s always been Real Madrid. You only have to do a quick Google search to find images of a young Kylian sitting in his childhood home with countless pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo adorning the walls. For as long as he could remember, he’s been manifesting this move and the Spanish club’s recent achievements in La Liga and of course in the UEFA Champions League this season will have only confirmed Mbappé’s decision to make the move.

How much does Kylian Mbappé earn?

According to BBC, Mbappé will only earn €15 million (~$24.5 million AUD) a season when he links up with Real Madrid on the 1st of July, marking a significant decrease from his current deal with the French champions Paris Saint-Germain, which sits at a reported €72 million ($117 million AUD) a year.

However, as Mbappé will join Madrid as a free agent, the Spanish club aren’t required to spend the €200 million-plus that a player of Mbappé’s quality and stature could demand. Instead, Madrid has offered the forward a signing-on fee worth a staggering €150 million (~$245 million AUD) spread over the next five seasons, in addition to a generous percentage of his image rights.

For reference, Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s highest-paid athlete, reportedly earning upwards of 200 million (~$313 million AUD) a year at the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, and it was even suggested that Mbappé could make a sensational switch to the Saudi Pro League in a deal worth up to $1 billion AUD a year.

The Mbappé deal represents a huge bit of business for Real Madrid off the back of an incredible domestic and European campaign. The rest of the teams in Europe will no doubt quaking in their boots at the prospect of Mbappé’s imminent arrival and the level this Spanish super team can reach with their latest Galáctico signing next season.
