David Beckham’s Inter Miami may not have existed for very long in the history of American soccer (football), but the Florida team has garnered a reputation for bringing in South American stars in the twilight of their careers, adding another La Liga legend to play alongside the football GOAT.

We’re almost halfway through the 2024 MLS season and Inter Miami are reaping the benefits of Lionel Messi’s immutable influence, occupying top spot of the Eastern Conference after 17 games played.

The side, managed by the legendary coach Gerardo Martino, has lit up the league this year with former La Liga stars Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suárez turning back the clock to turn the league’s newest franchise into prime Barcelona… and with the reports that Beckham is looking to add another one of Messi’s former teammates, the league could be set for another superstar signing in 2025.

Angel Di Maria signs for Inter Miami

Argentinian footballer Ángel Di Maria knows Lionel Messi very well. The pair have enjoyed playing together for more than a decade with French champions Paris Saint Germain, the Argentinian national team and the Olympics lifting a number of trophies including the Copa América and World Cup throughout their careers.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger, who currently plies his trade in Portugal with Benfica, is out of contract in the summer; and although he’s notched 9 goals and 11 assists in the league this season he’s reportedly set to join his former La Liga colleagues in Miami in 2025.

“The best thing that happened in my career is that I played with Leo Messi in the national team and club.”

For Lionel Messi, it must be another dream come true; retiring in the South American capital of the U.S. with a handful of your best mates. For fans of MLS football, it’s another legend of the game joining the ranks while he’s still got the legs to play.
