Charles Oliveira vs Dustin Poirier

Following his win over Chandler, Oliveira’s first title defense was against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269.

Back then, Poirier was coming off back-to-back stoppage wins over Conor McGregor and was one of the division’s top contenders. The Diamond was also a former interim lightweight champion whose last defeat heading to the Oliveira fight was against Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout.

In the bout, Oliveira weathered the early onslaught from Poirier and submitted the American via rear-naked choke at 1 minute, 2 seconds of round three to solidify his status as the best lightweight on the planet. It was also Oliveira’s 10th straight victory

Charles Oliveira Misses Weight Versus Justin Gaethje

But Oliveira’s official reign was short-lived. In a controversial weigh-in, Oliveira missed weight for his second title defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.

The Brazilian tipped the scales at 155.5 pounds during his first attempt. As per the rules, he was allowed an hour to cut the half-pound. Despite their efforts to do so, Oliveira still weighed in at 155.5 pounds during his second attempt. That resulted in the UFC stripping him of the belt, making the lightweight title vacant, with Gaethje the only one eligible to become champion at UFC 274.

Oliveira was stunned at the sudden turn of events. He later told reporters that he made weight using the UFC scale the night before the official weigh-ins. Oliveira claimed that he did not consume food or water after that so he did not understand why he was half a pound over the following day.

While Oliveira insinuated that something was wrong with the scale, UFC officials refuted his claim by saying that the weighing scale was accurate.

Oliveira went on to dominate Gaethje at UFC 274 and submit him at the 3:22 mark of the first round to win his 11th consecutive bout. However, he was no longer champion and he had to win his belt back.

Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev

While Oliveira won 11 consecutive fights, Dagetan’s Islam Makhachev had his own impressive winning streak which his 10 after knocking out Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night 202 on February 26, 2022. With Makhachev taking care of business against Green, the UFC set up a fight between him and Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight title at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.

Oliveira was aggressive on the feet during the bout but Makhachev looked to be the stronger fighter between the two. The Dagestani completed two out of three takedown attempts and racked up a total of five minutes of control time in a fight that lasted just over eight minutes.

In the second round, Makhachev dropped Oliveira with a right hand and then proceeded to secure an arm triangle choke which the Brazilian tapped to. Makhachev became the new UFC lightweight champion while Oliveira suffered his first defeat since December 2017.
