Islam Makhachev will defend the UFC lightweight title against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 next month.


UFC 302 is the next big event for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, headlined by the UFC lightweight championship fight between the current champion Islam Makhachev and the challenger, Dustin Poirier.

The event will take place on Saturday 1 June 2024 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It marks the first time the promotion will hold an event in Newark since UFC 288 in May 2023 and the 10th time overall in the city.

The bout will be the third title defence for Makhachev and the second time that Poirier will challenge for the 155-pound belt. The first time out, The Diamond ended up getting choked out by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 on 7 September 2019.

In his last bout, Poirier knocked out Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 on 9 March 2024. Meanwhile, Makhachev’s most recent fight was at UFC 294 on 21 October 2023 when knocked out former featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski.

While the event takes place on a Saturday evening in the U.S., Australian fans hoping to catch the lightweight clash between the UFC’s biggest names will only need to set their alarms on Sunday morning.

The early prelims are scheduled at 8:00 AM AEST while the prelims begin at 10:00 AM ET. The main card starts at 12:00 PM AEST and the ring walks for the main event are expected to be at 2:15 PM AEST, depending on how long or short the undercard bouts last.
