LeBron James Basketball Career

LeBron James was introduced to basketball when he was nine years old, after he moved in with the family of the local football coach, Frank Walker, in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. His mother, Gloria Marie James wasn’t financially stable enough to raise LeBron, so she allowed him to move to a more stable family environment.

Showing promise at such a young age, LeBron James began playing basketball in the Fifth Grade and eventually moved to playing Amateur Athletic Union basketball for the Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars. James and three of his friends then enrolled at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School so they could continue to be together and play basketball together.

High School Basketball

LeBron joined the varsity basketball team at high school and continued to dominate. It was at this point talent scouts would begin turning up to games just to see him play. He was dubbed “the best high school basketball player in America right now,” by Ryan Jones in the basketball magazine, Slam.

Cleveland Cavaliers

LeBron James was chosen as the first overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and recorded the most points scored by a prep-to-pro player in his debut performance with 25, an NBA record. While the Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t end up making the playoffs in his debut season, LeBron James was named the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Over the course of the next few years, James racked up a number of NBA Most Valuable Player Awards and was regularly named to the All-NBA Team. However, despite making the play-offs and some finals on several occasions, James never won the NBA Championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers during his first spell there between 2003 – 2010.

LeBron James resigned with Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 and eventually helped them to win the NBA Championship in 2015.

Miami Heat

In 2010, LeBron James signed with Miami Heat as a free agent, along with Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade. This move drew criticism from fans and high-profile industry figures such as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. His first season with the Heat ended in a loss in the Finals, but he helped turn this around in the 2011 season, which Miami Heat eventually won. This was LeBron James’ first NBA Championship win.

Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018 and in 2020, he surpassed Kobe Bryant on the scoring list, just one day before the LA Lakers legend died in a helicopter crash. James went on to help the LA Lakers win the NBA Championship for the 2020 season, making him the third player in NBA history to win the Championship with three different teams.

LeBron James Stats

LeBron James has had a glittering career in the NBA (and he’s not done yet). He has been named to 17 All-NBA teams, an NBA record. He has four MVP awards, a record he shares with Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell.
